The police were Irish, not English, but they drew criticism for being the agents of a foreign (and oppressive) crown.  Most undoubtedly thought they were doing an honest job for the good of their communities, but many in those communities (and their own families) did not see it that way.  Whatever one’s political leanings, one must admit it had to have been a thankless and dangerous task.
